The topic of abortion is currently quite contentious. How did the delegates from Inter-School Model United Nations (ISMUN) Human Rights Council (HRC) tackle this problem?
To start, on June 25 at 9:00 am, delegates assembled at the Hong Kong Metropolitan University Jockey Club Campus. Day 2 of the HRC began with the opening speech by the delegate of Cambodia on the second topic – ensuring safe and adequate access to abortion. China was next, then Germany, India, and Iran. Despite being a double delegations committee, only one delegate had to go up to the podium. The delegations from France, Argentina, Malta, Russia, and other countries entered the room during the opening speeches of the delegate of India.
The delegation of Argentina states, "MY BODY, MY CHOICE," speaking loudly to underscore. The head chair gave a nod of approval.
When seated delegates began to speak loudly during the delegation of Yemen's opening speech, the head chair had to pound their gavel to get everyone's attention.
After the opening speeches, the council entered GSL speeches. The chairs were astonished when they saw that everyone on the committee had prepared GSL speeches. The chairs arched their brows, opened their eyes widely, and glanced. The delegation of Argentina went first, and both delegates walked up to the stage. Point of Inquiry (POIs) was posed immediately following the speech. Overwhelming amounts of plaque cards were raised. The chairs questioned the council if the committee was in favor of a crisis. Since most delegates sought a crisis, The chairs only allowed three POIs in each speech. The delegates who raised their plaque cards the fastest were chosen to deliver their POI. Numerous POIs were followed up on. Due to time restrictions, the head chair had to reject them. At first, the chairs refused to let or even consider a moderated caucus. However, the delegate of Cambodia battled to get the right to a moderated caucus. The chairs acknowledged and permitted it.
"Ok. I will count 1, 2, 3, and at 3, the quickest two will be placed in the moderated caucus. Also, no POIs will be permitted," the deputy chair said.
The deputy chair announced, "1... 2... 5." The plaque cards of the delegates were raised through deception.
Then they said, "1... 2... 2.5...." All delegates who desired to join the moderated caucus lifted their plaque cards gradually. Delegates were so eager that they sprang up when the number 3 was declared.
The council entered an unmoderated caucus at 10:47 am, immediately following the speech of those who had been added to the moderated caucus. After loudly applauding, the delegates slowly got up from their chairs. They conversed with one another to create their blocs. Due to time restrictions, the chairs entered the room again and informed the delegates that the number of blocs was limited to two to three.
